Should I set a budget and more importantly tell people what it is!

It’s that dreaded budget word again….the thing people never want to talk about. Trust me I know, I’ve been there.

As a designer, I’m not in the business of making people spend more than they can afford on a project. I am in the business of creating stand out schemes though and for that you need to spend some money.

Why I think budgets are so important, is because they really influence your design choices.
If you don’t have a budget you will make a decision based on what you think every single item is worth and that’s exhausting. You will also panic about spending too much when you don’t actually know what too much is.

If you have a budget you have a good idea where you need to look for everything and you can balance your purchases across the whole project. This is much more likely to achieve the end result you’re looking for. It’s the more expensive elements you introduce that have the power to elevate the whole scheme. If you’re making those design decisions you need to be comfortable with them. That way you can enjoy the process and be excited about the transformation you’re creating.

The cost of something does not always dictate its value, but some things are just so worth their price.

So my advice is set a budget, make it work hard for you and stay in control of your project.
